“My favorite thing about winter? When it's over.”
The Winter season often gets a bad rep. To be honest it used to be my least favorite time of the year too. Like most people, I really dreaded it's arrival and always wished it was a different season. That is until, I learned how the winter season benefitted me. I stopped working against it and started flowing with it and now I have a true adoration for winter time. I still don't like the cold, but I love the season and what it does for me.
Winter is a time for stillness and introspection. A time to save our energy with deeper rest. Because there is usually less activity outdoors, this leaves more availability for self awareness if we make room for it. However most are not comfortable in the stillness and the internal dialogue that sometimes comes with it. So they continue to busy themselves even at the risk of their own loss of vibrancy. I wonder if this is part of the reason why some don't like the winter?
If we live harmoniously with winter we will not deprive ourselves of sleep, we take note of nature in dormancy and we copy it by making our rest a priority. We will eat nourishing foods that warm our souls and our body. We will not ignore our feelings but truly try to tune in to acknowledge them. We will move and stretch our bodies so that we have a better flow of oxygen, water, blood and nutrients to our vital organs and systems. We get comfortable with supporting ourselves in a deeper way on all fronts.
Much of living seasonal is based in the five elemental theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Each season is associated with an element, a body system and organ, various foods, emotions and activities. It is a very holistic approach. The element for winter is water, the body system is the urinary, the emotion is fear and the foods are warming and supportive of the kidneys.
My first event of the year is a winter wellness workshop to go a little further into how to use this theory to improve and thrive with our selfcare. With just a few simple & practical daily implementations we can use the season to become better versions of ourselves. If you live locally (Dallas Ga, Paulding County area) you can attend the workshop on February 3, 2024 at Solitude Beaty & Wellness. Click here to purchase a ticket
